Hedychium coccineum - Red Ginger

A robust ginger native to humid mountain forests from India to southwestern China with thick shoots from 1 to about 1.8 m tall that carry large leaves and a big, terminal inflorescence with beautiful red or dark orange flowers. Easy in cultivation, it adapts well to many temperate climates. Under cool conditions it is deciduous in winter and survives some freezes with copious mulching.
